ect/java/docs directory structure:

User documentation, e.g. running ECT, creating networks of components, using Processing with ECT.
Developer documentation, e.g. building ECT, creating new components, extending ECT itself.

Some of the more useful files to start with:

ECT_Build_Notes.html - some useful pre-requisites
how_to_add_a_new_component.html - good general starting place - for building and running, as well as adding components/
Using_Processing_with_ECT.html - like it says.
