What is a Collaborative Virtual Environment?

A Collaborative Virtual Environment (CVE) is one that actively supports human-human communication in addition to human-machine communication and which uses a Virtual Environment (including textually based environments such as MUDs/MOOs) as the user interface. This is an exciting field with much potential for inter-disciplinary collaboration particularly in the fields of computer science, psychology, sociology, architecture & urban planning, cultural & media studies and Artificial Intelligence.

Corpses. When a DIVE user client crashes it can sometimes leave a "corpse" embodiment behind in the world. A convention has evolved whereby surviving users "bury" the corpses under the ground plane. This image shows the aftermath of the EITC event, in which DIVE was demoed continuously for 2 days and sizeable "embodiment graveyard" was produced.

The opening scene from a VRML model of a POLITeam Desktop. The shelves in the scene hold folders and documents from a POLITeam desktop. A valid POLITeam user can click on any object on the shelves and get the respective container or document. The shelves are generated (in a variety of styles) by Python scripts.
