The group was formed in 1986 with the goal of:
investigating support for human communications through computer communications
The group conducts research into social computing environments: the use of computer and communications technologies including virtual reality, distributed systems and multimedia to support human communications and especially the work of physically distributed groups. Our current major focus is on Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs).
The group consist of sixteen researchers led by Professor Steve Benford, and Dr Chris Greenhalgh. We are funded from a variety of sources including The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), The European Commission and directly by industry (e.g. British Telecom and British Gas). Total funding for our research has been in excess of 2 million Pounds in the past four years.
